A great blue heron (Ardea herodias) catches a fish in Everglades National Park, March 2009.

Great blues are a common bird but are no less spectacular for it. Their sheer size is stunning; they really are the granddaddy of herons. It was a great blue that made it finally hit me that holy crap birds are dinosaurs, and for that I will always love them.

This bird is a really interesting color morph that I've never seen before, nor have I found anything about it online (admittedly I haven't looked very hard). I initially thought his head was dirty (lol shut up) but he was actually just a much deeper grey - but with a more muted black plume on his head - than most great blues. Almost dusky looking, for lack of a better term. I would have thought I was crazy, but a nearby photographer commented on it as well. The bird was quite young, so it's possible his color will change as he ages.

I wish I hadn't cut off his feet, but I was more intent on getting the focus right and apparently I can't multitask when I get overly excited.

beware of the leopard

So did the heron. :P

Fen has his whole head in his bell and is chirping like a cricket. Why?

Lovely. I do miss the great blue herons. We actually get them up in Alaska, but I haven't seen any around southcentral, where I live. Such beauty in the herodias.

Great shot.

Thank you. Yeah, they're pretty widespread, although the first time I saw one in Colorado my only thought was that he looked...cold. Out of place. But for all I know they're born elsewhere and go to Florida to retire like everyone else. They probably fly slow in the left-hand lane with their turn signal on, too.

And they leave their blinkers on for miles and miles and miles...
:iconstringoflights:
Well they do have that left turn into the strip mall with the bagel shop in five miles, which is about 20 minutes away. So really they have to be in the left-hand lane or they might miss their turn. The only way to properly convey such angst/lust for bagels is to leave that little BLINK BLINK BLINK going...

Excellent shot!

This is actually a pretty common morph for juvenile great blue heron, at least in my area (New England).

Thank you. That's very interesting. I'd never seen one before! Great blues do have some pretty wacky morphs. So this coloration doesn't persist into adulthood?
